Best Practices & Tips for Laptop Use in the Classroom

As more and more mobile laptop carts are purchased for the district the topic of "Best Practices & Tips" for use is important to share. Below are common problems and simple solutions for the use of laptops in your classrooms.

Issue: Slow log on time

Solution A: Students should be assigned a laptop number (which can be found on the laptops). Each time a class/student uses a laptop they should be instructed to use the same laptop number so that the students log on time is minimal.

Why: Once a user logs onto any computer in district it remembers their setting, so it boots up faster than the initial time you attempt to log on.

Solution B: "Stagger" your classroom log-ons, instead of instructing all students to log on at the same time. Break the class up into smaller groups of 5 or 6 students and have each group log on individually, then instruct another group to log on, etc.

Why: WiFi traffic

Issue: "Locked out" laptops when a different student attempts to log-on

Solution: Approximately 5 minutes prior to ending class instruct students to log off of their lap top. It is CRITICAL that students log off after each use in order to ensure the next student may log on. If a student is locked out (see message below) hold the power button down for 15 seconds until the lap top shuts down. Shutting down the laptop will force the log off, although it increases risk for damage to the files, so this is not best practice and should only be used as a last resort. Once the laptop has powered off turn the laptop back on and the student may then log on. Logging off properly will save time for the next class.

Why: If students do not log off, their account stays logged into the system and sometimes results in an error that the network or no "domain controllers" are available.

Issue: Receiving uncharged lap tops

Solution: When finished using the laptops, proper care and storage is important. Please place the laptops in their properly labeled slot in its laptop cart and plug their a/c power adapter in so they may be fully charged for the next class or the next day.
